greatest players

Fergus Slattery,
Fergus kicks off our list with the flanker earning his place by virtue of being a member of the victorious '71 side's tour of New Zealand, which remains the Lions only series victory on Kiwi soil, and for his role in the victory, three years later, in South Africa.

Graham Price,
The Welsh prop-forward played in 12 successive test matches for the Lions and, despite being unsuccessful in those tours, did more than enough to make his mark on several opposing players.

John Bentley
Originally gave up the amateur game to play his trade in League but made the switch back in time for the tour of 1997 and we imagine he's glad to this day he did. A series of darting runs made him one of the stellar performers of the series

Rhys Williams
Played 10 consecutive matches for the Lion on tours of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia and will be remembered for winning six line-outs

Brian O'Driscoll
'They call him God, I think he's better than that.'

Some praise for O'Driscoll from Stuart Barnes after his amazing try against the Aussies in the tour of 2001.

Very unlucky in the Tests of 2005 in New Zealand so will be looking to put the record straight against the Springboks in the coming weeks.

Dean Richards
Solid as a rock and one of the greatest number eights the game has ever seen. The dependable Englishman toured twice with the Lions, winning in Australia in '89 and coming close against the All Blacks in 1993.

Rory UnderwoodRAF pilot and flying winger who helped the tourists to a famous victory over the Aussies in 1989.

Scott Quinnell
Staked his place in Lions history after his try at the Gabba in the tour of 2001.

Richard Hill
The flanker went on three tours and was part of the successful squad of 1997

Mike Teague
Without the injured Teague, the Lions lost the opening game of the 1989 series in Australia. On his return the tourists won the next two tests, winning the series from a losing position for the only time in the competition's history.

Finlay Calder
captained the winning lions in 1989

Gavin Hastings
He played fullback, and captained the Lions on the tour to New Zealand in 1993 (after playing in all three tests in the 1989 tour to Australia).
